A person-centred approach to dementia care (2 days)

A 2-day course devised and delivered by DementiaTrainers.

Day 1

  • The experience of dementia: understanding the perspective of people with dementia
  • Facts and up-to-date information about dementia: types of dementia, symptoms, risk factors, statistics
  • Identifying factors that contribute to the difficulties in dementia
  • Developing knowledge about people with dementia as individuals
  • Life story work
  • Compensating for the symptoms of dementia and facilitating independence through the care approach, the environment and adaptations
  • Identifying and utilising the strengths and remaining abilities of people with dementia
  • A ‘partnership’ model: promoting independence and compensating for difficulties

Day 2

  • Understanding, supporting and working with informal carers / relatives
  • Recognising the needs of the whole person
  • Facilitating communication and choice
  • Responding to different realities – eg delusional beliefs and hallucinations
  • Understanding and addressing the causes of behaviours that challenge through identifying needs and understanding the individual
  • Responding to strong feelings and behaviours that staff find challenging
  • Providing appropriate occupations to meet needs of individuals
  • Positive outcomes: recognising well-being in dementia
