Person-centred practice in working with people with dementia
A 2-day course for social workers and occupational therapists devised and delivered by DementiaTrainers.
Day 1
- The experience of dementia: understanding the perspective of people with dementia
 - Facts about dementia: types, symptoms and their causes, statistics, risk factors
 - The assessment process: identifying factors leading to secondary losses of ability
 - Current drivers and guidelines for dementia care
 - A prosthetic environment: good dementia care design, adaptations and assistive technology
 - The assessment process: recognising needs of individuals and background information relevant to the planning of their care
 - Care planning: working to compensate for difficulties and maximise strengths
 
Day 2
- Person-centred work with carers
 - Facilitating communication and choice in identifying and meeting the needs of individuals
 - The impact of needs and unmet needs
 - Responding to different realities – eg delusional beliefs and hallucinations – and gathering information to inform the assessment process
 - Understanding and addressing the causes of challenging behaviour
 - Problem-solving through identifying needs and understanding the individual
 - Getting the balance right: a person-centred approach to the assessment and management of risk
 - The assessment of well-being as an indication of met needs
